Day 05a Mud Volcano

Mud Volcano is situated about half way between Yellowstone Canyon and Yellowstone Lake. It has turbulent pools of hot, muddy water, hillsides strewn with trees cooked by steam and strange odour. The trial is about 1km and it is less steep to follow the clockwise route.

3. Mud Geyser used to explode with muddy water up to 17m high before it died in the 20th century. Then in 1995 steam vents and shallow pools burst onto the scene and in 1999 mudpots were formed.


4. Churning Caldron throw water 1-1.5m high and the temperature averages 74 degree C.

10. Sulphur Caldron is one of the most acidic springs in Yellowstone. Its turbulent water have a pH of approximately 1-2. Its name comes from the large amounts of free sulfur in its water.
